function return values

is there a way i can return a variable via a function, and then have that variable available to the script in which the function was invoked? if possible, how would i go about using that variable?

i'm returning $error via validate_reg() in the fllowing code but when i call the function on the requesting script, it doesn't seem to be appear:

[code]validate_reg();
  if (!isset($error) ){
  echo 'no errors';
  return;
  }[/code]

You can do

[code=php:0]function validate_reg() {
  ...
  return $error
}

$error = validate_reg();[/code]
