Setting up email to work with a local SMTP server

Does anyone have experience of sending mail to an SMTP server set up on a local windows machine.
I have set my php.ini to
the server address and put in a sendmail from address.
my code is:

$to = "me@yahoo.co.uk";
$subj = "test";
$mess = "This is a test of the mail function";
$headers = "bcc:adminxx@btinternet.com";
mail($to,$subj,$mess,$headers);
I keep getting an unknown error.
