AJAX Error

I am new to ajax, I have not had to much trouble with it until now.

This code was taken from the tutorial:
function createRequestObject() {

var req;

if(window.XMLHttpRequest){
// Firefox, Safari, Opera...
req = new XMLHttpRequest();
} else if(window.ActiveXObject) {
// Internet Explorer 5+
req = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
} else {
// There is an error creating the object,
// just as an old browser is being used.
alert('There was a problem creating the XMLHttpRequest object');
}

return req;

}

// Make the XMLHttpRequest object
var http = createRequestObject();
The 'updateMailbox' function gets called on the onLoad event of the body.
I made reference to the line where I am getting the error. The error says 'Unspecified Error';
function updateMailbox(user){
http.open('get', 'updateMailbox.php?u='+user);
http.onreadystatechange = makeMailboxChange;
http.send(null);
setTimeout("updateMailbox()", 1000);

}//end updateMailbox

function makeMailboxChange(){
if (http.readyState == 4 || http.status == 200) {
var response = http.responseText;  <-Error occurs on this line for some reason.

if(response) {
document.getElementById("mailboxCount").innerHTML = response;
}
}
}
My .PHP file is not complete yet, I was just trying to get this to work before I coded it.
<?
echo "<b>Works</b>";
?>
Any ideas on what the problem could be or anybody just want to talk to me...?

Thanks
