I am writing a PHP-Ajax web application. I need to track all links in my document. Using IE I redirected all clicks to a function

var active = document.activeElement;

I want to be able to get the element that was clicked in mozilla and other gecko browsers. I don't intend to loop through all nodes or all links or to add an onclick attribute to the links. Can someone help me?
