It seems like you're nesting 2 of the same things ($result), and could be better typed like this:

<?php
if ($result = mysql_query("SELECT username,password FROM login WHERE username = '$emailID' and userpassword='$password'")) {
  $flag = 1;
} else {
  $flag = 0;
}
?>

Try that, and see how it works.
