Uploading An Image To A Database

I am just wondering if you can upload a picture the MYSqL database using PHP.

 

I was thinking about it and the way i "think" it would be done is:

 

You upload the image to a directory and at the same time, it creates a link and puts the link into the database pointing it towards the image on the server.

 

Is that the correct way to go about it?

 

and how would i do it?
