mysql_query INSERT INTO

My registration script won't work because of an issue with my mysql_query syntax but I can't figure out what the problem is.    When I click the register button, it displays a message that says Error: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ''Test2' at line 1  This is my code:

this:

should be:

values ('{$user}', '{$password}', '{$email}', '{$reg_date}', '{$mem_no}', '{$perm}')")

I changed it, but it's still the same error.

its this:

$membername = "SELECT * FROM vbb_members WHERE username='$user";

should be:

$membername = "SELECT * FROM vbb_members WHERE username='{$user}'";
