Weird problem, help needed!

I have a strange problem with htaccess and the rewrite engine.

We recently moved over from a Zeus webserver to Apache, so this is all totally confusing!

 

The rules I have:

 

ErrorDocument 404 /404.php

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain\.net$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /home/domain/htdocs/www.domain.net/$1

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.domain\.net$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /home/domain/htdocs/www.domain.net/$1

 

I then have another .htaccess in the "www.domain.net" folder that says

 

RewriteEngine off

 

The problem I'm getting is that if a url is entered manually, such as http://domain.net/about it will load http://domain.net/www.domain.net/about

 

Weirdly, if it's followed from an a href it doesn't.

 

Any ideas what I've missed?
