installing apache 1.3.35 and php

i tried to install apache 1.3.35 and to configure it with the php 5 version but it has refused to run when i run the cmd and stop the old apache after changing the configuration to allow for php use but when i do NET START APACHE it tells me that "The Apache Service could not be started," but it also says that The service did not report an error." i'm not sure what to do?
