MySQL 5.0 on Mac OSX won't start - START OVER?

Hey everybody. I'm having the infamous but deadly "ERROR 1251: Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client" issue.

I honestly have no idea how to fix it, and at this point I'm about ready to give up because I have no idea what is causing the problem. Some people say it's PHP, others say it's my "client," though honestly I still haven't figured out what that refers to in any understandable/usable manner. All of the fixes seem to be aimed at PCs, leaving me and my OSX 10.3.9 out in the cold.

If anybody knows how to fix it, I would love to hear from you, but otherwise I'm about ready to just delete all MySQL programs from my computer and install version 4, the last one I could get (and keep) running.

Does anybody know how to wipe all versions of MySQL from a mac system?

Thanks in advance
