CMS for a beginner - Can anyone recommend?

I need to give a friend of mine a tutorial on creating a cms using mysql & PHP.

 

Now I know there are hundreds out there, but all of them seem to be along the lines of speading the first 4 chapters discussing how to create a MYSQL database using the shell command when the guy will use phpmyadmin.  So i'm looking for a really basic tutorial which gets to the point quickly will tell him about:

 

1) sessions

2) setting up the admin section

3) setting up the db in phpmyadmin

4) adding data to the cms - INSERT

5) editing data in the cms - UPDATE

 

Any tutorials that anyone could post links to please?
