displaying japanese characters in subject line of email using php string

$ResponderSubject = "テド";

 

I have the above line of code, which displays some Japanese characters. This particular string will be displayed in the Subject line of an email. The problem I'm having is that the actual ASCII characters are being displayed instead of the Japanese characters. Is there a way to fix this? Any help would obviously be appreciated.
