"If" Question

I was wondering how to do this. I know usually when im using an if statment i do the following

 

if ( $id== 0 ) {
echo " something ";

} else {
echo " something else ";
}

 

 

Thats easy for me when I know what im looking for so to say. But what im trying to do is use the if statment to check if the table has something, and if the table is empty go to else

www.php.net/mysql_num_rows  check if that is > 0 (meaning it has something)
