receive xml, parse it & send it back

hi,

new to php (purchased php book 2 days ago) and after doing some reading the basics are fairly clear (similar to flash actionscript in a way). Could anyone please point me in the direction of some resources to learn how to receive an xml file (sent from flash), parse it (check for errors), save it to a given filename and send it back.

happy to do all the reading and learning etc.
