stevehirst
I've been writing PHP/Mysql website for a few years and am now 18 and looking for my first job with a company. Problem is, I can't get an interview. I've applied for any number of junior posts and none have bothered replying to my application. Anyone got any advice on getting that first job when you have no 'commercial experience' just programing for various people you know? I know i'm capable but no companies will consider me Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/63246-getting-first-php-job/ Share on other sites

Barand
Teng, There is no way you can call yourself a "professional coder" and have the attitude displayed in your sig testing the codes is a waste of time anyways edit: unless you you work for Micro$haft Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/63246-getting-first-php-job/#findComment-315252 Share on other sites

SirChick
i kinda disagree though :/ If im shown how to fix the error i get im never guna forget because i note it down for future reference. How ever this is because im trying to learn real proper. Where as alot of people want their code fixed and you wont see them ever again, unless it brakes again of course! Alot of my codes technically work and don't show any errors but the logic of my approach causes the incorrect result. That to me is much more difficult to solve than syntax errors. I agree with syntax errors it even tells you what its expecting or not expecting and what line its referring to! If people cant work out that at the very least they really should learn their starter php tutorial again...! Though i must admit i was slightly like that at the start but im noting out errors and putting key words to remind me what it could mean. Usually these keywords are what other members have hinted me. I don't tend to like to ask for help but at the moment even myself im asking for cos my current problem is a real pain ! I been taking up alot of teng's time lol sorry mate! But i do think having coders help out is nice..coding the same thing for hours on end can cause easy mistakes that another coder could see straight away which is why its important in some respects to have other coders take a look and say their thoughts so every nut and cranny is thought through thoroughly. cooldude832
People make mistakes in php thats not an issue, mistakes (especially syntaxical errors) are easy to fix with help. Just last night i had 6 of us boggled over me being stupid and writing $_SESSSION instead of $_SESSION the way to get out there in the world of php is communication and a portfolio. If you have a portfolio of work you can land projects way easier and charge a higher price. A good place to start is scriptlance.com where you can start doing freelance project right away and make money quickly, however it only works if you are in North America/Europe/Australia, otherwise 99% of paying clients will not work without. Coding quickly is another huge advantage, if you can slap out something quickly and then tweak it to your clients needs (communication) you will build long lasting relationships. I've had many scriptlance projects turn into lasting relationships with follow up jobs that have paid very well. I can not stress enough the communication, whenever I place a bid I write to the client my portfolio, location and I laid out the ideas behind the script (without too much coding) and then suggest improvements to their request that will make their project more tailored towards the actual solution they are seeking.
