Have a form with (for example) the following simple code:

<form method=post>
<input type="text" name="text1" />
<textarea name="text2" cols=20 rows=10></textarea>
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="Submit">
</form>

This form will submit to itself, since no action tag was included.

To then check for input, at the top of the php document add something like the following:

if (isset($_POST['submit'])) { // Check for the submit button
    if (strlen($_POST['text1'])>0 && strlen($_POST['text2'])) {    // User input data into text1 and text2
        // insert code here
    }
    else { // user didn't input data in text1 and/or text2
        // insert error code here
    }
}
