bbcode around highlighted text

i have a form type thing where users can post data to a table in a mysql database. there are buttons with bbcode on them, that people can use to format text, similar to that of a forum.

 

i need to know how to do this:

 

if there is highlighted text

wrap bbcode around it

or else

place the tags after text inputted into field.

 

i also need to know how to do this:

 

all cases:

place bbcode after text inputted into the field.

 

i hope there is an easy way to do it... thanks in advance
