i'm a HUGE fan of XMB forum.  It is pathetically easy to install and maintain and there are a ton of user-created hacks to handle anything feature that you might want added on.  I've also been able to futz around with it pretty easily to have it recognize the login information from my site's main portal.

I'm a high school English teacher and I used XMB for a year as a for a discussion forum class requirement.  I didn't have one problem with it that wasn't something regarding a change that I made on my host server, and it never got hacked once.

FTR, I started using XMB a few years ago because phpbb wasn't compatible with mysql 5.0 when mysql 5.0 was first released.  XMB is also used to host www.borsboards.com which gets some decent traffic.
