How to extract image from excel without COM?

I have used the Spreadsheet_Excel_Reader() to retrieve data from an excel file. It can successfully get the text data in a cell by the following. However I can get none of the graphics(maybe .bmp, .jpg, .... ) from the excel file.

 

$xl_reader = new Spreadsheet_Excel_Reader();

$xl_reader->read("filename.xls");

$cell = $xl_reader->sheets[0]['cells'][3][2];

 

Is there any thing I missed or Is there any other ways to extract image from excel without using COM because I am on linux.
