btherl Posted September 13, 2007 Share Posted September 13, 2007 My company hosts around 1 million sites on one box on one ip address. Around 90% of those sites get 0-1 hits per day though. cooldude832 Posted September 14, 2007 Share Posted September 14, 2007 The number you can host is based on a few things First You need physical hard drive space for each domain, so that is one factor Secondly You can host all on a single IP address, however the results won't be as great as you like based on flexibility Third RAM on the server, without enough to handle all the processes happening well odds are it will crash. Four Internet Connection Speed, this is the big one because you can really host from a simple dsl line all the way up to high end fiber and beyond Five: Limitations on software, pretty self explanatory. Basically all in all if you aren't looking for a corporate/professional level hosting you can host on your own machine, however with hosting rates being so low now to pay off the purchase of your server would take 20+ years probably, and that isn't including your monthly cost of Power and ISP connection. redarrow Posted September 14, 2007 Share Posted September 14, 2007 well i run my whole business on 4 server's and use dynamic services to get the domain's to my server then use a router to route to the main web server that provides apache to reroot to other server's. isp >>> router >>> apache >>>>> web server /// setup to reroot to the other three servers. apache >>>>> mail server apache >>>>> ftp server apache >>>>> backup server Yes i get plenty off users aound 60 thousand a week using my services, it is slow but works cost in uk 10 pound per week for electric. 3x 20 meg 120 pound per month + 40 per month electric = 160 per month my server setup all 4 are. server black cases. amd mother board amd chips kingston ram 2gb hard drives 250 gigs backup server got 4 gigs ram 1 tara bite hardrive amd chip The servers are in a deadecated room with big fans and it even hot then. ive been using my own servers from home a long time now diffrent specs, but maintance is high relly to do with new hard drives and ram and fans every year and half ten new mother bords now and then. benifits are i own them and i got complete controll over all my servers. I AM NOW CONSIDERING MOVING TO A DATA CENTER OR USE A HOSTING PROVIDER. Draw back is bandwith and cost currently at home i only got three 20 meg lines and it weigh the servers down as i get lots and lots off used bandwidth and ppl hanging on via images files ect ect ect ..... only wanted to learn php lol. last word try a free host see what u fell.
