Hi, how does site mapping work ?

Isn't even relative to php more of a xml question, speaking of which we need an xml board, any way a sitemap uses xml (or flat text) to dictate to a serach engine crawl bot the navigational flow of a site.  Crawl bots can then use this information to better understand your site and provide a better indexing of its sub pages.  Many serach engines have a ranking system and most of the ranking systems will diminish your ranking if you lack a site map.  As for with php a site map can be made via a php script, however a lot of free very good site map programs are out there that do what you want.  Also a sitemap can prove to be a useful tool when redesigining a site's primary navigation for you could see a traffic flow that you do not properly control and because of the map you see it.  Sitemaps are like a tree with each page branching out and connecting so forth based on forwards/backwards link.  They can go very simple from a list of all pages to a very complex web of intertwined pages, all depends on your needs/prefences.

Anyway to sum it up not a php question

yes it CAN be a php question. it may be possible that he is asking for a php sitemap generator *really hard to find a good one*

I found one that makes both a file list *and sitemap* of files viewable via filesystem, and via the website using a custom built crawling engine!
