trouble with code

okay so i have a code like

{ $productprice= $productprice* .9;///productpriceequals productprice plus discount

but the code isnt working i asked support why and they told me i would have to include it in cart.php, browse.php,details.php and checkout.php. also they said i would have to update the price into the database so lets assume there is a db field called price how would i update it if the category equaled necklaces then to take off the discount then update the discount into the db field? ???

there support team suggested i update the price field in the database. otherwise the price would stay the same? and it would virtually do nothing.

If that's all the code then, yes, it's not going to do much.
