mkdir() UNC paths? ?? ? HELP!

Has anyone had success in using unc paths?

 

It seems that this works from the command line on the server but not from the browser.

$path = '\\\\server\\data\\';

mkdir($path, 0777, true) or die ("nope");

 

if(is_dir($path)) {

  print 'directory exists';

} else {

  print 'directory does not exists';

}
