Newbee looking for php/mysql script/tutorial - Event Calendar

Hi Guys

 

I'm a newbee and looking for a fairly easy script to do the following. I'd ideally like more of a tutorial so I can learn something instead of just downloading and installing.

 

I want to set up an event calendar for a sports club. I want to be able to give n members access to add and update events. I also want to be able to query the events to pull into other parts of the site as well as displaying in a calendar (eg - display in a div the duty instructor for the week).

 

I've searched the net but can only find really complex download and install options.
