saattwoo
Hi All, I am just learning PHP and I installed PHP 5 and Apache 2.2. I have followed the instructions in the WROX book and it is just not working. http://localhost:8080/ is showing the test html page that I created but when I was asked to write a test .php page, nothing, file not found. As per it's instructions, I added: AddType application/x-httpd-php .php AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps to the httpd.conf file (which is not actually listed as httpd.conf but just httpd in two locations, apache2.2/conf and apache2.2/conf/default, that was slightly confusing) I also added #LoadModule php5_module "c:/php/php5apache2_2.dll" to the DSO Support in the httpd conf file. The Document Root is set to c:\program files\apache software foundation\apache2.2\test so that I can test the php file. I have copied the php5ts.dll file into win32 and it seems as though everything is set up. I am still getting HTML 404 error. I am not yet able to understand the error log but this is it: [sun Oct 28 22:48:21 2007] [notice] Apache/2.2.6 (Win32) configured -- resuming normal operations [sun Oct 28 22:48:21 2007] [notice] Server built: Sep 5 2007 08:58:56 [sun Oct 28 22:48:21 2007] [notice] Parent: Created child process 4604 [sun Oct 28 22:48:21 2007] [notice] Child 4604: Child process is running [sun Oct 28 22:48:21 2007] [notice] Child 4604: Acquired the start mutex. wildteen88
to the httpd.conf file (which is not actually listed as httpd.conf but just httpd in two locations, apache2.2/conf and apache2.2/conf/default, that was slightly confusing) This is most probably due to the fact that Windows by default will hide file extensions frm file names when viewed in Windows Explorer. I always disable this feature, to do so open any folder and goto Tools > Folder Options > View (tab) > Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types. Click Ok to apply the changes you'll now see file extensions for files. I also added #LoadModule php5_module "c:/php/php5apache2_2.dll" to the DSO Support in the httpd conf file. You did remove the # from infront of that line didn't you when you added it to the httpd.conf? Apache will ignore lines begging with # within the httpd.conf, these lines are considered as comments. The Document Root is set to c:\program files\apache software foundation\apache2.2\test so that I can test the php file. When you modified the DocumentRoot you did change the main <Directory></Directory> block too. (This is located a few lines down from where you set the DocumentRoot to. I have copied the php5ts.dll file into win32 and it seems as though everything is set up. It is not necessary to move files outside of the PHP folder. Keep all files within the PHP folder. Also make sure that restart Apache when you make changes to the httpd.conf (this also includes PHP's configuration file too which is called php.ini). saattwoo
I have corrected the syntax in the httpd.conf file but it still is not working. When I load http://localhost:8080/phptest.php it asks where I wouldlike to save the file. When I right click on the file itself (phptest.php) and open it with IE it only reads the HTML heading but none of the PHP test commands. Please find below the httpd.conf file text: # # This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the # configuration directives that give the server its instructions. # See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information. # In particular, see # <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html> # for a discussion of each configuration directive. # # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding # what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure # consult the online docs. You have been warned. # # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log" # with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2" will be interpreted by the # server as "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/logs/foo.log". # # NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes # instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache"). # If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located # will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply # an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid # confusion. # # ThreadsPerChild: constant number of worker threads in the server process # MaxRequestsPerChild: maximum number of requests a server process serves ThreadsPerChild 250 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 # # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's # configuration, error, and log files are kept. # # Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point # ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive # at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple # httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile. # ServerRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2" # # Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or # ports, instead of the default. Of course, CGI processing must be enabled by # the appropriate ScriptAlias or Options ExecCGI directives for the files # or directory in question. # # However, Apache on Windows allows either the Unix behavior above, or can # use the Registry to match files by extention. The command to execute # a file of this type is retrieved from the registry by the same method as # the Windows Explorer would use to handle double-clicking on a file. # These script actions can be configured from the Windows Explorer View menu, # 'Folder Options', and reviewing the 'File Types' tab. Clicking the Edit # button allows you to modify the Actions, of which Apache 1.3 attempts to # perform the 'Open' Action, and failing that it will try the shebang line. # This behavior is subject to change in Apache release 2.0. # # Each mechanism has it's own specific security weaknesses, from the means # to run a program you didn't intend the website owner to invoke, and the # best method is a matter of great debate. # # To enable the this Windows specific behavior (and therefore -disable- the # equivilant Unix behavior), uncomment the following directive: # #ScriptInterpreterSource registry # # The directive above can be placed in individual <Directory> blocks or the # .htaccess file, with either the 'registry' (Windows behavior) or 'script' # (Unix behavior) option, and will override this server default option. # # # DefaultType: the default MIME type the server will use for a document # if it cannot otherwise determine one, such as from filename extensions. # If your server contains mostly text or HTML documents, "text/plain" is # a good value. If most of your content is binary, such as applications # or images, you may want to use "application/octet-stream" instead to # keep browsers from trying to display binary files as though they are # text. # DefaultType text/plain <IfModule mime_module> # # TypesConfig points to the file containing the list of mappings from # filename extension to MIME-type. # TypesConfig conf/mime.types # # AddType allows you to add to or override the MIME configuration # file specified in TypesConfig for specific file types. # #AddType application/x-gzip .tgz AddType application/x-httpd-php .php AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps # # AddEncoding allows you to have certain browsers uncompress # information on the fly. These can be either built into the server # or added with the Action directive (see below) # # To use CGI scripts outside of ScriptAliased directories: # (You will also need to add "ExecCGI" to the "Options" directive.) # #AddHandler cgi-script .cgi # For type maps (negotiated resources): #AddHandler type-map var # # Filters allow you to process content before it is sent to the client. # # To parse .shtml files for server-side includes (SSI): # (You will also need to add "Includes" to the "Options" directive.) # #AddType text/html .shtml #AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml </IfModule> # # The mod_mime_magic module allows the server to use various hints from the # contents of the file itself to determine its type. wildteen88
Tested your attached configuration and it works fine for me, Although I did have to change your file paths as my setup is different to yours. When I right click on the file itself (phptest.php) and open it with IE it only reads the HTML heading but none of the PHP test commands. Ofcourse this will happen. Web browsers do not understand PHP and thus nothing will happen. PHP is a server side language. This is why you have to install Apache and configure it with PHP in order for your PHP files to work. When you request PHP files from localhost what is happening is Apache will send the request PHP file to the PHP interpreter (php.exe), this will parse the PHP code within the .php file. When PHP finishes parsing the file it'll return the output back to Apache (which will be html/text). Apache will then send that ouput back to the browser. The browser will then parse the HTML/CSS/Javascript within the output from the script. PHP code will never reach the browser (unless you have a misconfigured server). Would this have anything to do with what options I chose as the domain name and server name during installation? This has nothing to do with PHP and shouldn't affect PHP.
