Does anyone know how to setup a backup mail server? I've been having some serious problems with our mail server crashing. I'd like to setup an offsite MX and pop server that would automatically take over when the other one goes down.

The current one is setup with plesk, running on linux. I'm wondering how difficult it would be to duplicate all of the user data between the two (and keep them synced, somehow). I'm considering running the backup mail server on an OSX Server.

Ideas, input?

Hi there,

I have one suggestion for you.  What you can do is setup a secondary mail server, just a simple one.  That will perform a "catch-all" function at a remote location.  And what you do is setup your DNS records and give that one a lower priority something like 10.  And you setup your primary mail server with a mail priority as something like 1 or 5.

And then what you do is setup your primary mail server to connect to your secondary server with a POP account, and have it download and then redistribute those emails.

So that way, when your primary mail server dies, your secondary mail server will still accept all your emails.

I'm not too familiar with Linux mail servers, but I have set something similar up for a few clients.

Hope this helps!

DK
