.htaccess help

Why is this the only code I can get to work?

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ profile/profile.php?user=$1 [nc]

I don't want my URL formatted like that:

http://mysize.com/user/

I want it to format like this:

http://mysize.com/user

without the trailing slash at the end

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ profile/profile.php?user=$1 [nc]

I have tried the above, but get an Internal Server Error problem.

can someone PLEASE help??
