StreamMe
I've been programming in PHP and MySQL for about 6 months now, and since im launching a site in January on a CentOS operating system (buying servers in texas) I figured I should have CentOS running on my home computer. I know linux is alot more complex than windows, but I dont think it could be THAT bad. No experience with CentOS, and really I don't want it to slow me down too much. Before I do this. Can anyone think of a reason why I shouldnt? All I really need on CentOS is my LAMP setup and Dreamweaver 8/Paint shop pro running thru WINE .... Sound like a bitch or standard procedure? How diff is this linux world? Ive only heard good things.
leonglass
Go for it you won't be disappointed. At first I would dual boot so that if you have something to be done immediately you can fall back to your comfortable Windows system where you know how everything works. After a while of using it you will find yourself doing that less and less. It is a good idea to learn the skills you will require to maintain your server in a safe environment. Once you have got used to the system you will also start looking at programs that run natively like Bluefish and the Gimp so that you do not have to mess around with Wine. Bluefish is a very good replacement for Dreamweaver but a lot of photoshop users do not like the Gimp at all. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the complexity of a Linux system in that you will probably find it quite useable. You will probably want to learn some command line skills though as I doubt your server has an X server installed. Good luck.
