EUREKA! I got it!

Thanks to you I got the sudden idea to put the $a = into an If statement that worked one variable setting when the page loads and a separate one after Submit was pressed:

<?php
session_start();

//get current type selected
if($_POST['SubmitB'] != "Submit")
{
   $a = $_GET['EditThisItemType'];
}
else
{
   $a = $_SESSION['Type'];
}

// store session data
$_SESSION['Type']=$a;

echo $_SESSION['Type'];
echo "<br>";
echo $a;
echo "<br>";

$Submit = $_POST['SubmitB'];
$ItemType = $_POST['ItemType'];

The code now works and the update works perfectly too!!!
