how to make simple ajax webservic

Hi

im using dreamweaver to develop ajax enabled pages

i want to make simple ajax web service

and this is a tutorial that i followed

it gives me error "error 5 the response is not a valid json string"

 

and even a simple code like echo message says the same error message

any idea where is the problem ?
