I read the tutorial found here. http://www.kirupa.com/web/apache_php.htm

I installed Apache 2.2.6, and PHP 5.2.5 with no issues.

The local server works fine for .html extensions, but if I insert a .php file it either completely ignores it, or shows it as if I was looking at it in notepad.

So it will show the actual code.

My reasoning for running the local server is so I can do some work on my smf forum, without having to work on my live site.  So, I have the forum folder inside of /Apache2.2/htdocs/.  If I type http://localhost/forum/ it will list all the files inside of the /forum/ folder, instead of running the index.php.

I hope I've given enough information, I'm somewhat irritated from this and really tired, so please bare with me. :P

As far as I know I've added the correct lines to the httpd.conf file(At the very bottom, as I happened to see a thread here telling someone else to do so.), yet it doesn't seem to want to read anything other than .html.

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file.  It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default.  It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#

# ThreadsPerChild: constant number of worker threads in the server process
# MaxRequestsPerChild: maximum  number of requests a server process serves
ThreadsPerChild 250
MaxRequestsPerChild  0

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path.  If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk.  If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses (0.0.0.0)
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen localhost:80

I'm not sure what else you guys need to know, as you can see I posted the httpd.conf file.  I'll also attach it to my post.  If you need anymore information, or have questions please ask.  I've been messing with this for well over an hour, and have done countless searches.  None of the threads similar to mine seem to have been solved. :x

Edit: Forgot to attach the file.

*Jalkson needs sleep.

Make sure that you are restarting Apache when make any changes to the httpd.conf (this also applies to the php.ini)

Your configuration is ok. However do try to not install AMP within C:/Program Files. As a personal preference I prefere to install AMP in C:\Server. This helps to keep file paths to be an absolute minimum.

My guess is that the php code you tried was using short open tags <?

Always use full <?php tags.

[The reason I never suggest turning on short open tags is, not every one on every server will have the ability to turn on short open tags, so using them in any code will at some point in time result in code that does not work and has to be re-written. Take the easy way out and always use full <?php and <?php echo tags.]

I click restart after each edit, though I'm not sure it does anything.  I tend to click "Restart", and then also close it and reopen it.  Not sure if that will effect anything, but simply clicking restart seemed to not do much.

I'll change the paths from C:/Program Files/, to C:/.  Would it be ok to simply move them, or should I uninstall and reinstall everything?

I'm considering uninstalling and reinstalling anyways, simply to see if I did something wrong on the install.

@PFMaBiSmAd

I always use full <?php open tags.

Though I'm new to PHP(started messing with it a couple of weeks ago), I tend to always get in good habits with my coding. =P

The configuration lines are in specific sections in the httpd.conf file. I recommend adding your LoadModule and PHPIniDir lines immediately following the existing LoadModule lines and add your AddType line immediately following the existing AddType lines.

Also check your web server log for errors that might indicate why it is not using php.

The configuration lines are in specific sections in the httpd.conf file. I recommend adding your LoadModule and PHPIniDir lines immediately following the existing LoadModule lines and add your AddType line immediately following the existing AddType lines.

I had it that way at first, but changed it after it wasn't working and I noticed the post on here.

I uninstalled everything, and reinstalled in C:/Apache2_2/, and C:/PHP/.  While installing PHP5, I noticed it asked me to point it to my apaches conf folder, last time I believe I pointed it simply to the apache folder.

I thought that had solved my issue, but apparently it has not.  The only difference now is instead of me having to add the lines PHP added them as it was installed.

So now at the end of my httpd.conf file, I have this:

#BEGIN PHP INSTALLER EDITS - REMOVE ONLY ON UNINSTALL
PHPIniDir "C:/PHP/"
LoadModule php5_module "C:/PHP/php5apache2_2.dll"
#END PHP INSTALLER EDITS - REMOVE ONLY ON UNINSTALL

I also edited this line:

<IfModule dir_module>
    DirectoryIndex index.html
</IfModule>

into this:

<IfModule dir_module>
    DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
</IfModule>

I feel as though I'm forgetting something, but I'm unable to think of what.

Edit:

Just added:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

Under:

    #AddType text/html .shtml
    #AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml

Also, it says:

    # To parse .shtml files for server-side includes (SSI):
    # (You will also need to add "Includes" to the "Options" directive.)

So I changed options:

Options Includes

Now, I'm off to see if there are any errors.

Everything seems fine to me, unless I'm missing something.  I really don't understand why this isn't working. :x

What Windows version are you using? I know in Vista the Apache Service Monitor is a bit buggy as you have to run it in XP SP2 compatibly mode and as an administrator in order for it to work. Otherwise you wont be able to Start/Stop/Restart the Apache service.

Under Windows XP you should not have any problems.

I am on Vista, sadly.

Also, I've gone as far as installing WAMP, still didn't work.

XAMPP as well, still does the same thing.

It this all related to me being on vista?

I'm now back to the original way I had it, manual installation of apache/php/mysql.  After setting it to XP Compatible, and run as administrator it seems to work.

The only issue now, is this message:

The installer was unable to detect MySQL support in PHP. Please ask your host to ensure that PHP was compiled with MySQL, or that the proper extension is being loaded.

I guess you are install a script which requires a mysql database. In order for PHP to used with a mysql database you'll need to enable the mysql extensions within the php.ini. Please read this FAQ.

NOTE: If you have installed PHP with the Installer pease download the zipped binaries package from php.net and extract the contents of the zip to where you have installed php to, making sure you overright existing files and folders.

This thread is more than a year old. Please don't revive it unless you have something important to add.
