I want to stop people from viewing txt files using htaccess but I'm getting an internal server error.

This is what I put in htaccess:

<Files .txt>

order allow,deny

deny from all

</Files>

Error log:

C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/htdocs/.htaccess: order not allowed here

Try the following to actually block the files. As always, note when not to use .htaccess files

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/howto/htaccess.html#when

httpd.conf

<Filesmatch \.txt$>
order allow,deny
deny from all
</Filesmatch>

.htaccess

<Filesmatch \.txt$>
deny from all
</Filesmatch>

The directive "order" is, I believe, out of context within "Files" or "FilesMatch" when used in .htaccess

It's context is Directory or .htaccess (file root)

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_access.html#order
