[SOLVED] Disabled Page effect

I don't even know if I am in the right category on the forum for this but I usually see this implemented with ajax scripted sites.. On the same note I don't really know what it would be called to start properly looking and my searches yield no good results...

Anyway.. as mentioned I have seen it done on other sites.. and I am curious what is it and how is it done..

How do I upon load or click or whatever make it seem like the entire page is greyed out minus a little div area that comes up above all? For that matter what is the proper term for it?
