Includes Function? (Is there one?)

Ok so Im trying to code a button that lights up if someone is online and shows offline if they're not.  The login system that we have all the users online are recorded on a file serverdata.txt  Here is the code I have - I know its not right but you can see what Im trying to do:

 

$linha = file("serverdata.txt");
if ($username = $linha) {

print "<img src=online.gif>";

}else{

print "<img src=offline.gif>";
}

 

I want it to say if $username (IS FOUND ON) $linha then blah blah blah.  I dont know that function though, heck even if there is such a thing.  Is there?

can you use mysql instead as it will save you a ton of headache + ajax + flat files = ugly mess
