User subdomain (using htaccess?)

Hi,

I've been trying to find a good way to do this for a while. I don't have a lot of experience with .htaccess, but I would like users of a small community to have their own "subdomain."

For example, to view a user's profile, you'd go to http://user123.thedomain.com instead of http://www.thedomain.com/user.php?user=user123

But I'd like this not to interfere with other urls, such as domain.com/news forwarding to domain.com/news.php

How would I get about doing this?

Thanks in advance,

- Mi
