I am building a professional type of social networking application.  I am looking for a base to start this project.  I have looked at dating systems like Dolphin and PHPFOX which have some of what I want, but they are too dating oriented and look too much like a toy.  Other CMS programs seem to focus only on the content and not on the members themselves.  I need something that does both.

I do not think that there is a system that I just described.  I think I will have to build what I want, at least to some degree.  These are some of the thoughts I have.

  • Must use PHP 5
  • OO design is strongly desired
  • Has an extensible architecture for member profiles
  • Has groups
  • Groups have event calendars
  • Can integrate with vBulletin or SimpleMachines Forum
  • Can run in a hosted environment
  • Uses MYSQL
  • Database schema is well thought out and reasonably consistent
  • Uses an MVC architecture
  • Supports templates, skins, alternate layouts etc.
  • Can integrate with FlashComs chat and others

What I am looking for is some guidance.  I think this can be done by building upon an existing platform.  Which platform to start with is really the question.

Thanks everyone for your help.
