Cannot Install mysql on Mac os x 10.5 (leopard)

Hello, i'm new to installing mysql locally. But i have followed this tutorial exactly

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/setting_up_php_05.html#mysql_mac

I seem to be able to install mysql-5.0.51a-osx10.5-x86_64.dmg correctly

then when i get to this stage:

"Press Control-Z, then at the command line enter bg and press Return."

Nothing happens when i press ctrl z and when i type bg it says "-bash: bg: current: no such job"

If i type in /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql -uroot      it seems to break my terminal. it just makes the terminal window completely blank...

I want to use this mysql through dreamweaver, but dreamweaver cannot find any mysql.

Please can someone help me? I've tried every single tutorial on how to do it... Maybe i need to uninstall all of the mysql, how can i do that? Please help, i've been trying for 12 hours straight!

Thanks very much for your link. it works now.

for the Control-Z nothiing happened too and I didn't get your msg after typing "bg"

I don't think your issue comes from the mysql installation but the OS itself. At last maybe, try a system recovery to be sure :(
