Cant get file to attach

I am a beginer level php user

 

I have created a form that collects user data which runs a php script to organise this data and then open a template.RTF file and then replace content with the information the user has put into the form.

 

The file with the modified data becomes $content, The bit I am having trouble with is getting $content to attach to an e-mail as a .rtf file and be sent back to me. Everything i have tryed has failed. Problems ranging from doing nothing to e-mailing me .DAt files and emailing me .RTF files full of junk.

 

Could anyone point me in the correct direction please?
