can someone help pls i cant get sessions to work,

Recommended Posts

hi all,

im very new to php so can someone point me n the right direction pls , the problem is i get

Notice: Undefined index: mySessVar in C:\sinista\file2.php on line 4, when ever i save a var in a session and try to use the variable in another page.

heres my code taked from a solution to another post in these forums (ive tried other code to but i get the same error)

File1.php

<?php

session_start();

$_SESSION['mySessVar'] = 'someValue';

?>

Session variable set! <a href="file2.php">Next page</a>

when i open the above in my browser my temp file gets created and this is created in the file.

mySESSVAR|s:9:"somevalue";

So the above piece of code is correct or i wouldnt have a temp file with mySESSVAR|s:9:"somevalue"; in it , right????

Heres the second piece of code, the part i get the error from

File2.php

<?php

session_start();

echo $_SESSION['mySessVar']; // -- output: 'someValue'

?>

when this page is accessed i also get a new temp file but this time its empy (because the error happens b4 anything gets written??)

so my problem is how do i get rid of the error and make the varaibles pass between differnt pages, maybe my php.ini is wrong, so here it is maybe you can help me find whats wrong

[session]
; Handler used to store/retrieve data.
session.save_handler = files

; Argument passed to save_handler.  In the case of files, this is the path
; where data files are stored. Note: Windows users have to change this
; variable in order to use PHP's session functions.
;
; As of PHP 4.0.1, you can define the path as:
;
;     session.save_path = "N;/path"
;
; where N is an integer.  Instead of storing all the session files in
; /path, what this will do is use subdirectories N-levels deep, and
; store the session data in those directories.  This is useful if you
; or your OS have problems with lots of files in one directory, and is
; a more efficient layout for servers that handle lots of sessions.
;
; NOTE 1: PHP will not create this directory structure automatically.
;         You can use the script in the ext/session dir for that purpose.
; NOTE 2: See the section on garbage collection below if you choose to

Make sure a cookie called PHPSESSID is being set. This cookie should hold a valid 32 character sessions id string (the same as the temporary sess_ file). Eg if you get a a session file created called sess_ra8oanb3qr86t44t9dcg2fhbi5 then the PHPSESSID cookie should be set to ra8oanb3qr86t44t9dcg2fhbi5. This will also mean your browser must have cookie enabled too.

Also uncomment this line:

; session.use_only_cookies = 1

by removing the semi-colon at the start of the line. Save your php.ini and restart Apache.

hi m8 many thanks for your reply i have uncommented session.use_only_cookies = 1 and now my php.ini file looks like this,

   session.save_path = "C:\Temp"
;
; where MODE is the octal representation of the mode. Note that this
; does not overwrite the process's umask.
;session.save_path = "/tmp"

; Whether to use cookies.

session.use_cookies = 1

;session.cookie_secure =

; This option enables administrators to make their users invulnerable to
; attacks which involve passing session ids in URLs; defaults to 0.
session.use_only_cookies = 1

; Name of the session (used as cookie name).
session.name = PHPSESSID

; Initialize session on request startup.
session.auto_start = 0

; Lifetime in seconds of cookie or, if 0, until browser is restarted.
session.cookie_lifetime = 0

; The path for which the cookie is valid.
session.cookie_path = \

; The domain for which the cookie is valid.
session.cookie_domain =

how do i know if a cookie called PHPSESSID is being set?? in the ini file ; Name of the session (used as cookie name).

session.name = PHPSESSID is uncomented,

my temp file named ssess_ngqfea5uu2jqiep7t91fuktu64 still has mySessVar|s:9:"someValue"; in it and i still get the same error.

thanks again for your help

To check whether the PHPSESSID cookie is set is by looking through your browsers cookie manger/internet temporary files

Firefox: Tools > Options > Privacy > View Cookies > Type PHPSESSID into Search box. Firefox will show all cookies with the name PHPSESSID scroll through the list of cookies until you come to your sites domain name (eg yourdomain.com) within the Sites column.

hey yeah the cookie is being set it looks like this

Name: PHPSESSID

Content:3nuvlsks9bhorauo1q72h2agv2

Host:192.168.1.4

path:\

send for :Any type of connection

Expires:at end of session

so what do i do now, if im understand whats going on correctly the variable is being saved in the temp file, but the next page is having problems reading the variable from the temp file??
