Sub Domain Names

Hi, I'm intrigued to find out how the URL's on eBay work. The main domain name for eBay is: www.ebay.co.uk, but the signup page is www.signup.ebay.co.uk. How are the www.signup.ebay.co.uk (Sub domains) created?

Byusing virtual hosts if you're using Apache, if you have access to Apache's configuration

 

Or if your site has a control panel such as cpanel/plesk you can setup subdomains from their.

I have access to apache's configuration file, as I use Xampp. Where do I find this file, and what do I need to do? - is the file php.ini?

for testing you could tweak your hosts file

 

start->run

%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

 

MAKE A BACKUP

your hosts file should something like this

127.0.0.1      localhost

 

now if you change it to

127.0.0.1      localhost

127.0.0.1      images.localhost

 

 

Now you need to edit the httpd.conf file,

i don't use xampp, but if you look in th

\xampp\apache\ folder you should find it,

BACKIT UP!

 

open it and add a virtual host IE

<VirtualHost *:80>

ServerName images.localhost

DocumentRoot "C:/public_html/images"

DirectoryIndex index.php index.html index.html index.htm index.shtml

</VirtualHost>

 

reboot apache and then goto http://images.localhost

that should work

He probably wants it to be public

 

Dysan that is all DNS, virtual hosts can be setup for local use just like MadTechie shows, however for it to be public and everyone to see a DNS record for say  subdomain.mydomain.com must be pointed in the dns records of your host to your server.
