Is ActiveX capable of rendering a desktop based API on a browser?

Have I understood ActiveX if this is what it does? Is it a PHP based language that does precisely this? If so, how can I go about learning it? I'm looking for a way to integrate desktop software into an automated web browser based process. You think ActiveX would be capable of this, especially considering, though I may be wrong, that most, if not all, browser based automating tools are text based and not image based? Cheers. -
What PHP script can transfer a non browser API onto a browser?

I'd like to use an application that's not browser based, on Internet Explorer. I've read somewhere that this is possible with a PHP script, but which one? If you can get me on the right track, I'd really appreciate it. Cheers.
