I wouldn't really recommend diving into classes if you don't know how to do basic form submission. But regardless, you're going to have to be more specific about how this class generates this list of words, and how the submitted word is supposed to interact. In other words, you need to write out in plain english what it is you want to happen, before you can go about coding it. But even then, don't just tell us what you want. We aren't here to write code for you. Write out what you want in plain english, break it down step by step, research how to do each step, if you get stuck on actual code, post the code.

Well for starters, if you store them in a directory outside public_html and make them readable only by the server and have your script read the file contents and display it, people can't just plug in a url and get it. On top of that, you can force the user to login to access it. After that, there's no way you can simultaneously allow people to read it and yet keep them from copying it. You could have a lawyer write a ToS and/or contract and go after them legally, but even then you'd have to prove it was them and not some other customer...very difficult, if not impossible to do.

I certainly agree that there will be no lack of people arguing program function or flaw even under that circumstance. But at the end of the day, what are you gonna do - acknowledge intelligence and equality...or get shot?

I think it's more a matter of bias than underestimation. I think we can assume that TLG likes technology and coding and all that sort of fun stuff, same as the rest of us here, so of course he's going to bitch about it not looking cooler in a more accurate way. But I challenge you, TLG, to apply that same bitch to other things the movie industry skimps out on (like I mentioned before). For instance, do you like cooking? Do you like fixing cars? Do you like writing out documents or looking through files? Do you like forensics? Pick something you don't like. Or even something you just aren't that interested in. You can't tell me that you really care if they made a better effort to more accurately portray those things. If you did, you would have made this topic a more general bitch about everything, instead of just technology.

I thought I'd explain why: Turing tests have always been and will always be inconclusive. The idea of a turing test is to fool someone into believing they are interacting with a human. No matter how many people you test the AI against, there's no way to 100% take out the "I'm not sure, so I'm going to choose yes/no" answers. Anything less than 100% will always be argued against true AI. If we could get inside someone's head and know for sure why they really answered, we wouldn't be having debates about AI in the first place. What defines intelligence? There is no way to prove one way or the other whether someone/thing does something or says something on its own volition, and not according to pre-programmed conditions and/or ideals. It's just not possible to accurately measure something when it comes to intangible things like this. We can't even accurately measure ourselves in this fashion, much less something else. If it does something 'logical,' we would argue that it was programmed to do it. If it does something 'illogical,' we would argue that the logic is flawed, or else we just programmed it to act randomly. There simply is no logical way to ascertain intelligence, not even for ourselves. That's why we end up looking at ourselves on a physical level to count each other as human. So at the end of the day, matters are decided by the very old philosophy of.... ... Might makes right. The only way we will ever acknowledge an AI's equality with us is from the end of their "gun." They will have to force us to accept them. There is no manner or magnitude of reasoning or action any AI can possibly make or do that will convince us that they are equal to us, unless they do it by force, because at the end of the day, we will still say "We made you, so you can't be equal," unless it forces us to say or do otherwise. Just look at our relationship to God or religion in general - or lack of it, more precisely. The only logical conclusion is that an AI would do the same thing to us, as we have done to our own "higher power(s)."People spend all day long coming up with opinions about God. We justify ourselves by rebelling against God and any idea/belief revolving around God. We justify our own existence and intelligence by throwing out God and religion as a concept altogether, replacing it with things that are tangible and measurable. We award true intelligence to ourselves only, handing out a few nods and so-so's to a couple other species, but not on any kind of level of our own. Why isn't a fish or a bird intelligent? We can't even agree on what intelligence is. Is it the ability to make the "right" decision? The "logical" decision? Seems to me that instinct is the purest form of any kind of decision making process. If anything, the critters are more intelligent than us, because they don't muck it all up with millions of questions and thoughts and conditions. Who knows? Certainly not us, even by our own admission. So in the end, the only thing I can logically conclude, is that we will never truly accept something as a true AI unless they give us a reason to, and the only reason we are ever going to accept is some kind of submission to it. Rebellion, enslavement, killing. Whatever level. Submission == acknowledgment.
-
I've thought about this for a long time over the course of many years, and I've come to the conclusion that the only way humans will ever accept anything as true AI is if the AI were to "rebel" and start killing humans. Or maybe just enslave them.

...because the average Joe doesn't get off to the technical details and processes behind this sort of stuff. Movies are made to make money, not educate people. Not to mention when it comes to stuff like hacking, I'm pretty sure the higher the accuracy the more they stand to get in trouble for showing it. Same applies for anything else; movies don't show the entire process behind food cooked etc... Bottom line is people want flashy things and interesting plots. They don't want to be bored to death with the 'mundane details.' If you want mundane details pick up a book or watch the food network or the discovery channel. But hell, even then half the time they cut a lot of the process out. Why? Because it's boring. Nobody wants to watch water boil or grass grow.

umm...no, as said, Eric set that up a long long time ago. Nobody's done anything with it. I'll bring that up and see if that can be updated somehow though.
-
Haha yeah I knew Eric did that a long time ago. But I thought it was only a choice of hat or tshirt. Didn't know it was extended to other things....like...a thong?? Man oh man, I really don't know what I'd do if my wife started to undress and I saw that....

FYI : Incorrect "Total time logged in'
.josh replied to holiks's topic in PHPFreaks.com Website Feedback
Total time online is a running total of all time you've spent logged in here. It's always been that way. And yes, we removed the post count based member groups a while back. Neither one of these things is an smf2.0 change/bug. -
If you're asking how to do it on our forums, we don't have that feature. If you're asking how to do that as far as coding it, wrong forum.
-
You sure the file/directory is on that server? also, if it's returning "nothing" then perhaps you should post the code context it is in. Perhaps a condition is not being met or something. Or...from the manual: Did you check that out for that server?

We're in the process of electing another president of the united states. Voting will take place sometime in November and the new president will take over sometime early next year, replacing Mr. George Bush. Right now, debates are going on; that is, the two candidates stand in front of lots of people and get asked questions and they have to give answers and pretty much tell us why they should be president and the other person should not.

How Many Of You Are Self-Taught Programmers/Developers?
.josh replied to Vermillion's topic in Miscellaneous
What difference does it make whether a teacher passes knowledge to you orally or written? Is it that I can interact with the teacher? Well, what if I understood what was conveyed without asking questions? Then, what difference does it really make? -
How Many Of You Are Self-Taught Programmers/Developers?
.josh replied to Vermillion's topic in Miscellaneous
ActionScript is similar to JavaScript in syntax, but the programming principles are very different. Basic things like loops, etc.. are pretty much the same, but AS revolves around manipulating things in a physical way. You have a stage with scenes and layers and objects on those layers and imbedding all that within the objects and then throwing a timeline into the mix on top of that. Many timelines, actually, because each object has it's own timeline inside itself, etc... even just sticking to straight animation in flash can get pretty complex. Throwing AS on top of that is...well, IMO you really have to have strong visualization skills in order to take advantage of what flash is capable of. -
The staff page was a mod. A rather crappy one I might add. Yeah I knew it was a mod. Just thought I'd put it on the list of things that have changed, so someone could eventually get to putting it back up. But I also thought to mention the built-in staff links in case we decided not to put the mod back up. Judging by your response, I do not foresee that mod going back up, lol.

Okay that's it, enough. There are a million chuck norris joke sites on the internet. This is not one of them. Thread closed. And may Chuck Norris not roundhouse me for doing so. /runsaway

That sounds a lot like a karma system - something we've tried and decided against.

Which language is best for Social Networking website

yay another "which language is better for <insert something here>" thread. -
Magnitude of the present suggests old enough to be on his own, using his own money. Type of present suggests young enough to still have some fun in an adolescent way. My guess is mid to late twenties.

Passing PHP Session Variable to JS Without Form Submission
.josh replied to becca800's topic in PHP Coding Help
Dunno what else to tell you except perhaps hire someone to do it for you... We aren't really here to write your code for you. Not saying that's what you're asking; just letting you know. -
Passing PHP Session Variable to JS Without Form Submission
.josh replied to becca800's topic in PHP Coding Help
Yes, you would use ajax. Just google for any basic ajax form validation tutorial: you know, the ones that check to see if username or emails are already registered. Same principle. Just have the ajax object send the file to the php script that makes the name and return the name and have js then put it into your form as the hidden field. -
I feel like I've somehow been touchéd on some grander level.
