For security purposes, turn off SSH for root and enable super user on one of the userid for server admin purposes.

Check with the web host if you have PHP and MySQL support, and if you do, then you are likely able setup PHP MySQL forum board in your subdomain hosting account, you can consider phpbb, smf, vbulletin etc. forum program.

Your mysql server admin will have to enable the 'slow query log' option in my.cnf and mysql will start logging slow queries to a log file, server admin will then be able to extract out the queries related to your db. reference :- http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/slow-query-log.html

Joomla is rather slow on releasing new updates, it may not be ready for PHP 5, you might want to request your web host to move your account to a server with PHP 4 while waiting for Joomla to fully support it.
