  1. Hello, all. I am terribly sorry ahead of time for the noob question and if it's been asked before. I ask that you please be patient with me as it takes me a moment to understand things. I have installed on my Windows 98SE machine: Apache 2.2.8 PHP 5.2.5 MySQL Server 5.0.51b phpMyAdmin 2.11.7 (If this question has been asked/resolved before, please point me in the correct direction ) I have successfully been able to start MySQL and then enter my root user password at the MySQL Command Line Console. I get the 'Welcome to MySQL' message and the general options for help, etc.. However, when I want to shut MySQL down, I get the error message: Shutdown failed; 'Access denied; you need the SHUTDOWN privilege for this operation' I have read on other places and I can't seem to find an noob-friendly answer on how to create grant tables. Can someone please please consider writing me a step-by-step process to get the correct permissions sorted out? Do I need to make another user? Do I just use 'root'? Please help.
  2. Thank you for your replies! I'm sorry about the Windows usage...I have just received my Puppy Linux disc in the mail (my internet connection times out during long downloads which is why I couldn't download Xampp or WAMP). I have to upgrade the memory and will be able to use Linux on that machine (finally). I do have good news in that I managed to get the PHP working! I had to create a separate php conf file in the Apache /conf folder and edit the httpd.conf. Now it's all working and at least I can play until my computer parts get here. Thanks a million guys. Sorry for the trouble.
  3. Hey, all. I'm utterly confounded. :'( I had a score of problems with Apache installation, but got it to working. I get the "It works!" page when looking for http://localhost:8080. I'm using Windows 98SE. I'm sorry, but it's all I had. I did everything according to these directions: http://www.thesitewizard.com/php/install-php-5-apache-windows.shtml I used the "Install PHP as a module" option. Someone said that Apache would list PHP beside it in the bottom of the service monitor window, but I'm not seeing that. When I go to open my browser to point to http://localhost:8080/test.php, it comes up with either a page cannot be displayed or simply a blank page. Then sometimes it says that there's a dnserror. It will load .html files just fine, but PHP will do nothing...so I'm assuming that I've messed something up. I have my .php test files stored in the htdocs folder, btw, which is the root. In the tutorial it was suggested to test and run a command line for "c:\php\php-cgi test.php" which I did...and it returned the following error: Status: 404 Not Found X-Powered-By: PHP/5.2.5 Content-Type: text/html No Input File Specified Someone please help me. What am I missing? I'm so new to this...this is so discouraging. It's like you have to be born knowing this stuff. :'(
  4. Does anyone have any ideas? Please. I'm sorry that I'm using Windows, but it's all that I have. :'( When I attempted to do a graceful restart, I received the following message: (OS 10048) Address already in use :make-sock: Could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:8080 No listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs I thought that something else was listening on Port 8080, but it doesn't matter which port I change to. In task manager, the only thing that I saw and didn't know about was the process of Pdvdserv (which has to do with using a remote-control for the DVD player). I don't know what to do. Please someone. I will be so grateful. :'(
  5. Okay, all...blessings to you and if you saw my earlier post then you may known that I'm running Apache 2.2.8 on a Windows 98SE machine. I finally got the service to install and to start. It is indicated in the system tray icon for the monitoring service now! So yay. Problem is that when I try to shut it down or stop it, it won't. It won't shutdown nor stop via the monitoring service nor by httpd.exe -k stop or httpd.exe -k shutdown. When I attempt to stop or shut it down, it says that the Apache service is stopping and then comes up with "Failed to stop Apache 2.2 Service". Can someone please help me? I would be forever grateful to you. Blessings to you all and thank you for your patience and time.
  6. Super! I'm really excited about this now! At least it's running and operable! I will get to putting the files in there...
  7. Ahhh that's excellent to know that it's running at the least. Blessings to you for your help! I am installing Linux soon and it may be a better working environment at any rate. I appreciate it as I've gotten no help from elsewhere. Thanks so much.
  8. Hi, all. My name is Torey and I'm pleased to be a part of the forum with all of you. I am quite new to web development and had hoped to install Apache 2.2.8 on my old Windows 98SE machine to help me. My dilemma is that Apache seems to not be running, or at least the small indicator icon for the monitoring service in the system tray says that it's not. I have tried reading the Apache product documentation, but it seems so alien to me. I don't understand how to use commands and where to type them...my console window (upon opening) has a flashing cursor, but I can't type anything in the box. After trying, my computer beeps every time I try to press a key when in the console window. Upon opening the console window via the Windows Start menu > Programs > Apache 2.2.8 > Control Apache > Start in Console, the small icon does not display the green "play" symbol and still says that Apache is not running. I try to open the monitoring service and start Apache, but there is nothing listed and all of the "start" or "restart" buttons are greyed out. When I tested the server by opening up a browser window and pointing it to "http://localhost/" it displays the "It works!" message. So I'm even further confused. I cannot even shut Apache down by "X"-ing out of the console window as I'm told to exit via the program. I have no idea what to do and would be most grateful if someone could help me.
