i still take the stance of 100% custom programming as apposed to using drupal, or joomla, or yes even wordpress..  sure it takes a little longer, but the client gets only the functions they need and/or want.

 

Why recreate the wheel? Most opensource platforms are created by developers, used by the same and tweaked along the way. So the older platform, the more stable it becomes. This is usually the case although last time I looked Magento had something like more then 10,000 files. This can be a huge learning curve but I don't think a developer could sit down a code such functionality within 6 months or even a year....(debugging, stabilizing, etc)
