restoring from back up

I had another developer send me a backup of a database but it doesn't appear to be a sql dump.  It was in a zip file but when uncompressed the file is a .bak file.  I tried opening it with a text editor and it isn't a text file like a .sql file would be.  Any idea what I have here?  I know from them it is a mysql backup but I don't want to look like a fool and ask them what it is.  ;)

And then how do I go about restoring it?!  :-[

I think you need a program to do so... from what ive heard at least  :-\ I would go back and ask them for the .sql dump. When it comes to programming everyone programs differently. One person says its one way the other will swear against his own way. I guess some people work with .bak... but myself and you work with .sql dumps - dont feel stupid asking it is what it is.

Sorry I wasnt a GREAT help, but dont ever think you look like a fool when doing something a way you know how to do something. Theres no wrong answer.
