instant message question

Hi,

MAC os 8 and 9 users may be familiar with the Broadcast system that lets people send a message to any other user who is logged in on the network. Also, it was possible to send a message to all users who are currently logged in to the network. A user(s) would recieve a message pop-up, which he could either ignore or reply to. As this is no longer available on OS X, but was very handy, does anyone one know of a simliar application using php/mysql? I have found a couple of 'maybe' applications, but both would require extensive modification. Obviously the least amount of modification, the better.
