Count(*) + LIMIT = headache

<?php

$a=mysql_query("SELECT `name`,Count(*) AS Count FROM `articles` ORDER BY `ìd` DESC LIMIT 3,7");
while($b=mysql_fetch_assoc($a))
{
//...
}

?>

why wouldnt $b['Count'] give back a number?

i even tried using

<?php

$total_a=mysql_query("SELECT Count(*) AS Count FROM `articles` LIMIT 3,7");
$total_b=mysql_result($total_a,0,0);

?>

but $total_b wouldnt work either... i just need the total so i know where to insert a line break

shouldnt:

<?php

$total_a=mysql_query("SELECT Count(*) AS Count FROM `articles` LIMIT 0,1");
$total_b=mysql_result($total_a,0,0);

?>

equal to 1?
