vhosts

Sorry if this has already been posted, I just can't seem to figure it out :(

I'm trying to add a vhost to my already existing host.

My apache server on windows is listening on port 80 and works fine (Except for logs, which started acting up when I tried doing the vhosts thing..), but I want another website on port 8080 and I thought I could do it with vhosts.

Anyone want to explain how this would work with what I currently have?

Here's my current httpd.conf file..

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file.  It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/XAMPP/apache" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/Program Files/XAMPP/apache/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default.  It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#

# ThreadsPerChild: constant number of worker threads in the server process
# MaxRequestsPerChild: maximum  number of requests a server process serves
ThreadsPerChild 250
MaxRequestsPerChild  0

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path.  If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk.  If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "C:/Program Files/XAMPP/apache"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses (0.0.0.0)
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

# 'Main' server configuration
#
# The directives in this section set up the values used by the 'main'
# server, which responds to any requests that aren't handled by a
# <VirtualHost> definition.  These values also provide defaults for
# any <VirtualHost> containers you may define later in the file.
#
# All of these directives may appear inside <VirtualHost> containers,
# in which case these default settings will be overridden for the

# the C:\Program Files\Perl directory, the shebang line should be:

   #!c:/program files/perl/perl

# Note you _must_not_ indent the actual shebang line, and it must be the

#
# However, Apache on Windows allows either the Unix behavior above, or can

I don't feel like reading through your httpd.conf (sorry x.x), but here is the general gist (for name based):

Listen 80
Listen 8080

NameVirtualHost *:80
NameVirtualHost *:8080

<VirtualHost *:80>
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost *:8080>
</VirtualHost>

Technically, you don't _have_ to use another port, but it works. The problem with this solution is that any visitor will have to specify ":8080" after the server/ip address in the url - eg. www.myhost.com:8080/mysubdir

The alternative is to vhost by NameVirtualHost...

NameVirtualHost 192.168.0.5:80                  <----- tells apache to serve up hosts by name/url on port 80 -- you MUST specify the port here

<VirtualHost 192.168.0.5:80>

    ServerAdmin admin@localhost

    DocumentRoot /www/docs/server1.myhost.com/    <----- tells apache what directory contains the site for this vhost

    ServerName server1.myhost.com                          <----- tells apache what name/url to match (pattern matching)

    <directory "/www/docs/server1.myhost.com/">      <----- tells apache what permissions to use via the directory directive

      Order allow,deny

      Allow from all

    </directory>

    ErrorLog logs/server1.myhost.com                          <----- tells apache what location/file to use for error logs

</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost 192.168.0.5:80>

    ServerAdmin admin@localhost

    DocumentRoot /www/docs/server2.myhost.com/

    ServerName /www/docs/server2.myhost.com/

    Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes

    <directory "/www/docs/server2.myhost.com/">

      Order allow,deny

      Allow from all

    </directory>

    <Directory "/www/docs/server2.myhost.com">

      AllowOverride None

      Options None

      Order allow,deny

      Allow from all

    </Directory>

    ErrorLog logs/server2.myhost.com

</VirtualHost>

create the specified directories and add some page(s).

restart apache and enjoy your vhosting by name/url  ; )
