I learned when i was around 12-ish with a book called "PHP in easy steps" from the Easy Steps Series, cheap and to the point, got you going. Once i finished that book i had a great understanding of PHP, enough to learn and experiment on my own.

Although the book i read is almost definetely out-dated due to the new OOP concepts etc. But if your trying to grasp some of the concepts of PHPs design then i swear this book will help! lol.

If your not new to programming then PHP will come like water to you, the only thing you would ever need ever is "php.net", solely for the functions and bugs list. I would not be able to code anything without php.net's function manual.
